Africa has a standing record of supplying legendary female artists like those of Angélique Kidjo, Miriam Makeba, and Branda Fassie. One Cameroonian singer has embarked on a journey to stamp her name in the record books next to these legends – one song at a time. With her Urban Soul, Alternative Afrobeat, and Dancehall vibes, the self-taught Ghana-based singer and songwriter T’neeya (Jennifer Tania Takoh) is fast-becoming one of the continent’s favourite new-age voices.
T’neeya started singing passionately at the age of six. She was only 13 when she began writing her own songs. Alongside two others, she led a school choir of 600 girls at the age of 17. Although she attended fashion school at the University Of Applied Sciences in Berlin, music has kept her going steadily.
T’neeya’s debut single “LIVING IN THE MOMENT“ got her a ticket to the 2013 NRJ Newcomer contest in Germany as well as a nomination in the ‘Best Song’ category for the MMM Sound Casting. With the assistance of Poperrazi, Heart Media, and Power Promotions UK, the single was a topping the charts.
She cites her influences – Michael Jackson, 2 Baba, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu – as a major source of inspiration.
T’neeya collaborated with the “Tomorrow” hitmaker and La Meme Gang Member Darkovibes on her single “Love”.
She’s also collaborated with Ghanaian household favorites Kidi and Kuami Eugene.
These collaborations swiftly made her a constant name in playlists of must-have urban african songs.
In 2018 she released “Low Battery” which charged across Africa and the rest of the world with its vibrant music video directed by award winning director, David Nicole-Sey Jr.
T’neeya skillfully surfed the waves that had built up and soon released “Text Me” with her new label Aristocrat Records.
We can expect a lot more music, coupled with amazing collaborations and good vibes that keep you swinging.
