The New host country of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), will be known early next year.  The hosting right was withdrawn from Cameroon at the end of November, because of delays in preparations. Since then, many other African nations have expressed their interest to replace the Indomitable Lions’ country.

Current AFCON champions: the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon (5 titles)

The deadline for applications is scheduled for December 14th and by next year the new host country will be known. Who shall it be? Morocco? Congo Brazzaville? Egypt or South Africa? We’ll just have to wait to find out.

In the meantime, Cameroon has been entrusted to host the 2021 AFCON. According to Mr. Ahmad Ahmad, la Côte d’Ivoire, that was supposed to be the host for that year, won’t be ready on time. Therefore the west African country has more years to prepare until it can host the tournament in 2023.

The upcoming 2019 AFCON will be the first to feature 24 teams since the format was expanded from 16 countries.
